July-August Report Phnom Penh Cambodia

Well the two months have been pretty busy, with a lot of work going into the website, and trying to have our Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved, the new version of the website is now very nearly finished with a couple of more links to go into some pages, there are a lot of improvements and amendments completed. The flash sequence for the main page is complete and additional info on the students page is being completed.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been a problem with the Director continuingly putting up barriers to our application, this should have been a straight forward affair but nothing is as straight forward as it seems. We need this to give us official recognition and a registration certificate, this is required before I can canvass prospective sponsors here in Cambodia and overseas, we then finally have to present our papers to the Council for the Development of Cambodia for registration. It has been a long and frustrating process and we aren’t at the final goal yet but we are well on the way.

In cooperation with TVK the two DVD’s are now complete and will be uploaded shortly, I must thank them for their efforts in producing these two DVD’s, in particular I would like to thank Jack Horowitz who wrote the narrative and suggested the  background music, also Andy Ahmed for providing the dialogue for the longer sequence which is seventeen minutes, the shorter version is four minutes, both will be available on Youtube with a link from our website.

Our Agriculture students are progressing well having now completed the second semester we are still awaiting the results, these will be posted when available.

The finance students are also progressing well having now completed their second semester and we are still awaiting these results, these will be posted when available. Unfortunately Maggie finished her time at Harpswell house and has moved on, I am endeavouring to find a replacement.

Veasna talked to a group of students at a 3 day seminar about the positive roll that women can play to influence other women and the general public. It was well received although attendance was not up my expectations.

A meeting was held at Veasna’s house where we discussed the possibility of merging our girls into a central house with other female students, plus we had a showing of both videos. During this meeting a second hand laptop (donated by Mr. Jack Horowitz) was presented to Kosal Chhai as he was the top student at the Agriculture College for the first semester.Veasna also introduced a group of students wishing to be part of our organisation and attend the Royal Universty of Law and Economics and complete a law degree, the posibility of sponsoring these students will depend largely on enough funds being available for us to fully cover these students

I have also met with Pises from Projects Abroad, we recently had a weekend trip to Kho Rohng Samloeng a small island off Sihanoukville where  they have a conservation project, we went scuba diving with them to see the conservation work they are doing there to try and save the sea horse and coral reef areas, a very worth while project. You can check them out at www.diving4conservation.com We discussed the possibility of another volunteer english teacher from his organisation, he  had some good news to say that he may have another english Teacher sometime in October.

I will have a meeting with Fabian in September to plan our strategy for the future

Regards

Steve Chika Director C4C
